Keeping Score: Tracing Time

Oscillating in and out of the Covid lockdown has compelled us to collectively reflect on the passage of time in more pronounced ways. This exhibition brings together artists who dissect public and personal memory, observe cerebral and emotional sensations of temporality or conflate past and future to find new vocabularies to measure time. Keeping Score Tracing Time is a collaborative curatorium between Parramatta Artist’s Studios and Mosman Art Gallery.

For her new work, A book as a park as an album as a forest (2022), Bradford presents a series of collaged archival photographs of Haw Park Villa, which she has tinted by hand… [T]he work is a photographic collage, but it is also an index, a compendium, an atlas, and, as her title suggests, the remnant of a pulped tree. It both is and isn’t a painting, and/or a book, and/or a sculpture, and/or an installation. In eliding such coherent definitions or endpoints, Bradford is refuting the taxonomies and visual languages of Empire – a way of seeing that so often insists on classifying all aspects of our world. If A book as a park as an album as a forest forms its own taxonomy, it is one that revels in being unreliable, playful, skittish, and illusory. The tinting process helps with this – by painting over the top of photographs, Bradford is creating double versions of the images, ones that can have multiple timescales within a single frame.
